Hey guys!
The other day I was walking down my driveway when I saw a baby bird. He
noticed me and popped his beak wide open and chirped at me for some food. My
neighbor came over and said he'd been watching the baby since earlier that
morning and there hadn't been any parents caring for it. Thinking he was a
fledgling that was taking his first flight and fell to the ground like they
do, I kept an eye on it for a few more hours (it had been nearly 8-10 hours
since any parent bird had come to help him and he was looking pretty weak).
However, no mommy or daddy bird. :(
I called a wildlife rehabilitator in Auburndale and asked her what to do.
She said if a parent bird hadn't been around in that many hours, he was most
likely orphaned. Poor guy. She told me to go get it and put it in a basket
with some towels and feed it wet cat food. I told her that I'd try to get
him up to her so she could care and release him, but I didn't know when I'd
be able to. She told me what to do to care for him until I could get up
there. I got him and I realized he was still a nestling... so his parents
really should have been around and he shouldn't have been out of his nest.
Soooo.... I have this freakin' adorable baby blue jay (I think...it's hard
to tell but I'm 95% positive) on my sunscreen. Gah...he's TOO cute! He eats
sooooo much and makes little poopies. ^-^ I'm such a proud mommy. He's
already lost most of his down and feathers are popping out. He even learned
how to perch today! :D I gave him a nice perching lesson. *mental image*
Sadly, I'm not licensed to keep and release him and I need to get him up to
Auburndale before he bonds with me too much more. He already hops around and
follows me and then hops up on my legs when I sit down next to him. TOO
CUTE!
If anyone is able to, and I can't help with gas money right now (sorry, I'm
broke due to not being able to work for 3 weeks... I'm back to work now but
I don't get paid tomorrow) so this would be strictly out of your love for
animals, I live in southern Polk County (about 2 hours south of
Orlando....email me for the exact city) and I need to go to Auburndale in
Polk County, which is about an hour north of me. It doesn't matter what day.
I'll take off work for a few hours if I have to. Even if it's a few days
from now. I just need to call the wildlife rehab and tell them when I'll be
there. If anyone is interested, please let me know. :) This bird is too cute
and I want it to be taken care of correctly and released. I might get the
car back this weekend. If so, I can cancel with whoever and do it myself. If
not, I'd like to have a Plan B already in place just in case.
Thanks!
